MAS GRANDE QUE SU SED

Rabid Eno completists, this one’s for you (cough-cough, crickets). Caroleen Beatty and Doug Hilsinger have made a cover version of Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) with two voices, four hands, and no keyboards and it’s really good! MP3 samples of it are available on their website and you can buy it on Amazon. Eno likes it very much:

‘I wanted to say again how much I enjoyed your version of Taking Tiger Mountain…It’s strange and enlightening hearing it through your ears – and very kind ears they are, too.’

Today I picked up a Cubano from a Cuban restaurant I’d never been to before. They presented the bill to me on an old tin tray painted with a Betty Boop on water skis. ‘Mas Grande Que Su Sed’ it said on the rim. I asked what ’sed’ meant and the man said it meant to say, ‘bigger than you are thirsty’. It was an ad for Lula Cola. I’m pretty sure they didn’t have permission to reproduce Betty’s image when they made that. Here, here.

Twisters

Last night, I dreamed there were tornadoes careening between the skyscrapers of Manhattan. There were at least four at once: huge, hyperreal columns of angry grey half as wide as the widest buildings. I was standing by a high-rise window, looking out, when I saw them all suck down to earth at once. I yelled and pulled someone (a woman) away from the glass by their shoulders but neither of us could take our eyes off the whirlwinds. It was the most realistic dream I’ve had in some time.
