Fleur de lis

Had a good three person Gunshow last night at Royal Wood in Williamsburg. It was at this bar called Royal Oak that has a dark wood and leather, antique wallpaper, Columbus (OH) swank to it, which I found both pleasant and depressing at the same time. The stage area in back is quite nice: fleurs de lis on the walls, a few deep booths, some tables, a raised stage and a decent PA for the standups. The audience was…tiny, unfortunately, as yesterday’s weather was brutally cold — the first cold snap of the season. One person came in during our show, bringing the audience total to seven: 3 standups, 2 hosts, 1 DJ and 1 bona fide auditor. Still, it gave me a good feeling to be watching and performing for my fellow comedians; everyone was very supportive, giving feedback to each other on jokes and such.

Our show began in the typical fashion (true stories from our lives, seated) but ended up having a very different character from most of our shows, which tend to have simple transitions between two person scenes. We had some really fun transformational edits; the bridges between scenes were longer and ambiguous in a good way; the scenes coalesced slowly as we fed off each other. I ended one scene collapsed (drugged?) on the floor, stayed that way through the next scene, and began the one after that as Steve Rubell. (One of Lou’s stories in the opening was of a private school classmate who’d had a birthday party at Studio 54.) I felt irresistibly drawn forward by my (and Lou and Ryan’s) impulses — a good feeling. There were some name and gender gaffes, but so it goes.

Our latecomer turned out to be an improviser I know from the PIT, Alex, who invited us to fill in at Drinkytown, so we’ve got two shows tonight! Drinkytown at 7 pm, Juvie Hall at 9:30. I’ll be missing the first one to attend Beth’s collaborative class performance at Parsons.
