the Neo-Futurists

I saw TOO MUCH LIGHT MAKES THE BABY GO BLIND tonight. It was really, really good. It had the charm and inventiveness of a bunch of first-time playwright-performers putting on a show at a weekend retreat — yet written by non-first-time writers. There were so many things I liked about the show it’s hard to know where to begin.

You roll a die to determine whether your ticket will cost 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 or 16 dollars. The audience shouts out the number of the play they want to see next. Two actors stood on chairs holding umbrellas with bare bulbs attached, pouring water on an actor with watering cans. A liberal use of mikes when needed, including the aforementioned scene’s narration. A pile-on of monkeys on your back. A slow dance. A magic trick. A random audience member playing a part in a crush scene who moved like Charlie Chaplin and put on lipstick and kissed the girl with no hesitation. A blindfolded rant about baseball. A guilt-free pleasure break. Animal Collective Faux Motivational Meetings I-VI. Swinging shadows.

I loved it. It was much better than Cats. I’m going to see it again and again.
