Chiptunes concert rocks off every face in the house
Saturday night my face was rocked off repeatedly by the chiptunes music of Bubblyfish, Hey Kid Nice Robot, Glomag, OMAC, Receptors, Nullsleep, David Sugar, Bit Shifter and M-.-n. Each had a completely different style. I was really looking forward to hearing all the out-of-towners after checking out their tracks online and they did not disappoint (and were very sweet and fun to hang out with). Likewise the visualists: Chika, Ilan and I all used Modul8 but our styles are very different. Paris used Pure Data/Gem and Johnny Beverly 1989 used a hacked Nintendo and Sega. I shared the fruits of my labor with Chika:
DAN: Want some sprite movies?
CHIKA: Chicks. Give me sexy chicks.

So I grabbed a few Street Fighter lady sprites and sent them over. She used them to great effect.
I didn’t record either of my sets. I completely forgot. Didn’t even take any screengrabs. I was engaged.
My hours of media preparation paid off: I got many kudos on my visuals. After the show, David told me that people kept asking him if we’d played together before and synced the visuals to the music, which is a high compliment indeed, as we hadn’t planned anything.
By the way, all of the musicians have mp3s up on their sites (and David’s got some great tracks on myspace). Have a listen.
