the state of all things dan (almost)
My brother pointed out that my blog has been impersonal/work-focused lately So
Let us Touch and Feel the Rich Inner Life of Dan
how am I doing? What do I look like now? Am I eating enough cottage cheese?
I’m doing well / I look like this but I still smile occasionally / no, never have, never will
School’s going great. I’m turning into a wild-eyed media theorist. On Friday after Sara’s last show I got to talking with a blogger and –boom– the cheap latch on my mouth snapped and I was off and running about new media, old media, media media media. It’s good stuff and I actually enjoy the alienation. It makes me feel like I can handle my little media skiff better. Pete, if you didn’t read that post, I am going to make you read some Adorno.
Family Is Important to the Dan
My brother came to visit a couple weeks ago and we had a great time. We rented a car and headed upstate (close to the PA border). The DIA center in Beacon is closed on Tuesdays so no Serra for us, but it worked out well. We went to (what used to be) our grandparents’ farm in Fosterdale. The woman who lives there now was very sweet and showed us the whole house. I took a few pics of the trip. That pond? My grandfather dug it. We used to swim in it when we were little. We visited our grandparents’ graves. Much weirder and sobering than the last time I was in a graveyard. Ah, how I have ripened and matured…
And the Funny Do the Funny
On Sunday, I acted in Saturday Night Rewritten, which was a lot of fun: good people and good sketches. I didn’t see SNL the night before so I have no idea how close/oblique SNR was to its inspiration. It’s a fascinating touchstone for today’s conflicting notions of originality and creativity but I’ll leave that for another post.
Sharing Is Caring
Did someone say originality and creativity? Share continues to be a big part of my life. We did a special Share in a woodshop for the Bushwick Art Projects on Saturday, which went really well. Sunday was another good Share. We’ve been getting all dirty/sweaty/(andmebloody) running cables and stuff in the basement of Mundial. We’ve got the DSL and the WiFi working and the server should be in place to handle the stream this Sunday. Rejoice!
Money Is Also Important But Not Everything, Mon Petit
I’ve been webcasting for the New School part-time. It’s good work and good money. Right now I’m waiting for video to encode. Money’s been tight since I started school — as one of Ernest Hemingway’s Spaniards would say, i obscenity in the milk of the ancestors of school bureaucrats who cannot manage to deliver my student loan in a timely fashion — but I haven’t been sweating it. School make happy. Video’s done, time to wrap this up…
And Love
I’m out there and dating, in what little time I have left after all of the above. Further deponent sayeth not.
